Leading the clean energy industry
We are amid an energy transition. Businesses are moving from fossil fuels to renewable energy to reduce their impact on the environment.
98% of the electricity BC Hydro generates is from renewable resources. We are one of the largest energy suppliers in Canada, generating and delivering clean electricity across the province. In 2022, the greenhouse gas emission (GHG) intensity of our integrated grid was an average of 11.5 metric tonnes per gigawatt hour (GWh) in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This ranks B.C.'s integrated, low-carbon grid among the cleanest in western North America.
Operating in British Columbia (B.C.) provides your business with hydroelectricity at some of the most favorable rates in North America. Reliable, low-cost power reduces your business's GHGs, helping you meet Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) commitments and lower operating costs.
We also continually invest in reinforcing our integrated grid to deliver energy reliably in a changing climate, ensuring long-term resilience for your business.
Our clean energy commitments
We are an integral part of the B.C. government's CleanBC plan, one of North America's most progressive climate action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 (based on 2007 levels) and reach net zero by 2050. We are collaborating with industry and local governments to take action. Together, we are protecting nature, building a low-carbon economy, and helping more businesses transition to clean energy.
We also support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to protect the planet, reduce inequality, and ensure prosperity for all.
B.C. is the ideal location for energy-intensive companies focused on minimizing environmental impact. Find out more about how we support businesses in our ESG report.

- Clean power generation and reduced carbon footprint
- A reliable grid, with a 2.18 SAIFI rating and a 6.32 SAIDI rating in fiscal 2023
- 12,000 MW of annual power generation
- CAD$3.9 billion invested in fiscal 2023 to ensure the reliability of our system in a changing climate
Our integrated grid stretches across the province with 30 hydro generating facilities over a network of over 50,000 miles (80,000 kilometers) of power lines transporting electricity to homes and businesses in B.C.
98% of our electricity is generated from low-carbon or renewable sources. For more information about our energy mix, read our Annual Service Plan.
We provide incentives, support, and competitive rates to help make it easier for energy-intensive businesses to electrify and decarbonize their operations. We keep costs low for customers by encouraging electrification and energy efficiency. We keep rates low by trading power through our subsidiary Powerex.
The GHG intensity of hydroelectricity typically ranges between 10 and 30 metric tonnes per GWh, meaning B.C. has the cleanest generation in Western North America and amongst the lowest GHG emissions of any utility in North America.
